When Husband & I were engaged (for like three years) we used to talk about what we would and would not allow for our future children. We would go places, see random children doing Terrible Things, or worse, be Terribly Annoying just by their mere existence, and add whatever Terrible Actions/Behaviors to our list of Nevers. Some things we agreed about, others only one of us cared about.
OUR children would Never watch television all day. What’s the point of having children if you just park them in front of the TV? It’s Not an acceptable babysitter!
OUR children will not leave the dinner table while other people are still eating. That’s just disrespectful.
OUR children will never wear those Annoying sneakers with the wheels. Who thought up that product and why does any parent allow their children to wear them? Kids need to walk, not skate their way around! That’s just encouraging childhood obesity!
We will NEVER have a DVD player in the car. We don’t care how long the trip is! In fact, if we buy a car that comes with one we will special order a car without a DVD player!
We will NEVER make special meals for OUR children. They need to eat what is offered. Making special foods just creates picky eaters.
I’m sure there were more. Our noses were quite high in the air as we made our list, shaking our heads in that disapproving manner unique to the childless couple.
We will NEVER buy a game console for OUR children. If they want a game console they can save their money and buy it themselves.
After three years of parenting our convictions have changed, slightly.
I’m still holding out on those stupid sneakers with wheels!
